 Life in Library Land

I realized that I haven't given you an update on what's been going on in Library Land lately.  First of all, I've been recovering from some sort of a virus for the last week.  Staff have been dropping like proverbial flies.  Yesterday, three of us called in sick and one person left after half a day.  It's a bad time of year when dealing with the public.

Library weirdness has been at a minimum lately.  But strange people/things have been happening.  I had someone call in today wanting to schedule an appointment with the tax folks (Mid East Agency on Aging).  I repeated the telephone number that she'd have to call five times...She still didn't get it so I turned her over to someone else.  The other employee had the same trouble I was having with her.

Then I got another call...a sales person from India...or Pakistan...working for ATT.  He wanted to know if I made the decisions for the phone/internet lines.  I told him you'll need to call HQ.  He started asking questions about the service we have.  I replied all decisions are made by Headquarters.  You'll need to call them.  After the third or fourth time of repeating myself, I told him one last time to call HQ.  Instead, he called back two more times and was told by different staff members the same thing.  English was not his strong point.

Last year, we had a security system installed at our branch.  It has been messed up for 2-3 weeks now.  Intermittent and strange beepings complicated by lost or disruption of our phones.  It's beginning to get on everyone's last nerve.

By the end of the year, we will be entering the wonderful world of R.F.I.D. or radio frequency identifiation.  It's a system that sounds good on paper.  Stacks of items could be checked in and out at once.  It's supposed to make inventory control easier by letting us know when something is misshelved.  Naturally, staff is upset.  Noone likes change...We'll be running two different systems for at least a year and a half.  So life is going to be really interesting in Library Land.

I think possibly these changes would be easier to accept if the alarm system and phones ever work right.  Instead, it seems like Murphy has taken up residence and his laws are creating chaos.  But we'll get through this like every change that I've experienced in my library career.

On a personal note, please pray for the Kennedy family (friends of our foster daughter, Amber).  In a tragic case of poor judgement, Josh and Ryan Kennedy were killed when their car hit a bus while trying to evade a police stop.
